The best of YOU. Who brings out the best of you? Who are those people who have decided that you won’t give up, won’t get tired, and won’t throw in the towel? Who’s on your “home team”? Sometimes we need that core “LIFE BOARD of Directors” I can’t say it enough… these are the folks who cheer you on, when you get discouraged. Kinda like an Facebook or LinkedIn group online (smile)… Whether it’s online or offline or your very own core “group of folks” you’ve connected with out there…get some true “life line” folks.

I meet with a group on Wed mornings at Mimi’s. A small group of folks who ask every week… “What are your goals for this week?” Then the following week, they want to know how that worked for me? Sometimes we need to get it out of our heads, off the paper, off the “to do” list and SPEAK IT into existence. SPEAK IT to somebody who is going to ask you about it, tomorrow, or next week. Find your accountability linkage….and LINK UP!

Invasion of the Body Snatchers or My Smart Phone is Too Darn Smart!

Got my "ANDROID" in July, and I’ve been on my own with bonding with it ever since I left the girl at the counter. At one point I almost took it back to trade for something I didn’t have to always TOUCH Screen to get a text out. I’m used to using both hands and even had gotten to the skill level of using one hand to text. So in-stock charge vs learning about what I have… I kept the phone. YET… I have NOT had the TIME to read the book. So as I continue to bond with this SMART PHONE… I find myself on outlet alert always being conscious of any plugs in the room, and of course I now always carry the charger in my purse. Now who’s smart? LOL!

As the bonding continues I have started to see some interesting developments. FACES appearing in my address book on my phone. People I don’t really even know, but have at some point been added to my network or email. NOW I am SEEING them IN my phone. I just added a person on LinkedIn and now I see his face in my phone? HOW WIERD IS THAT? In the past… I… decided …WHO… and HOW I wanted to tag a phone number in my phone. Now my phone will ring with someone calling me for the first time and TA DAAA! a face appears in my phone. Now this takes caller ID to a NEW level. I’m blown away. How did these people get into my phone? "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" was a movie I saw when I was younger, but I never imagined that technology would come so far. THIS is as SCARRY as a Friday Night movie! What in the REAL world is going on?

Are we there yet?

I am reminded of the days of being a commuter and how that made for a very, very long day. I would rise and shine (on "dimmer" mode) trying to function but not wanting to "really be awake", only to save some of that sleep state of mind "to be continued" … rushing to get the 4:55am train that ALWAYS left on time. There was no second guessing any delay on this train. So of course being an "early bird" at that hour… it meant that I would continue my nights sleep immediately upon the train pulling off. Something about the motion I looked forward to that just rocked me back to sleep. I would set my cell phone alarm to 30 minutes prior to my stop to ensure I did not over sleep my stop. My next "wishful thinking" was that someone else would not be a talker nearby, that would "mess that cycle up"- interruptions.

Having a system in place to get to work on time and in this case an hour early was not the problem. Coming home… well THAT was the challenge. There seemed to be a schedule of arrival time listed, buuut during the season I commuted almost 3yrs…it was an unspoken code that we "might not" make that advertised schedule. After leaving work at 4:30pm I would head to the station to depart at 5:15…to arrive at 7:25pm… sort of. We had to first leave at 5:15… And reasons that this may not be the case:

Train’s late arrival from where it just left
A freight train (which meant product before… people)
Bad weather so the sensors went out
Construction on the track

These fun little distractions were "TIMELESS"….not to mention pricless. These would cause me to get home at various times:

7:30pm, 8:00pm, 9:00pm, 9:30pm….and the best and latest time ever was …. wait for it…. 10:00PM..

Remember I had to face the 4:55 departure the next day… so I was so "travel drained" and HUNGRY, that it felt like I was walking in my sleep. A functioning sleep walker. Are we there yet? Try text messages from Mom that asked, "Are you home yet?" on a daily basis, because it was always a "wonder of what time is she getting home today" quiz.

As you travel to work by car, plane, or train…. possibly vanpool… the motivation is surely the job opportunity and not the travel time. Consider what a "walking, talking organizer" you must be. Multi-tasking on the train… using travel moments to plan your bills, your Saturday time off, your calendar, and you probably even have planned to sign up quickly for "paper plates" on the potluck list so that you don’t have to commute with a dish, too. Yes commuters have to be the time manage specialist. After all it takes so much out of you to travel… Thus you MUST balance things out by using the travel time to …. plan your next moment. Are we there…. yet?

Father…TIME

There is something to be said about the time we’ve spent talking to our Dads. Depending on where you grew up, probably made a difference in the content of those talks. Talks of :

Why you did not do what your mother said

Don’t play in the street

The easiest way to save time on a project

Father "time" and mother time were different subjects. We saved the "where did babies come from?" talks for her, but Daddy moments were for sports, driving, and "where does that boy live?" kind of TIME. You wanted to make "Father Time" count. Dad was so busy, so when he showed up, you almost had to have a list of things you needed to run past him. Timing with Dad was everything.

Time in a bottle…or a drive-thru

So if you are parents with busy kid-schedules that may mean you’ve been waiting on that TIME Ship to come in …months ago. Now with the summer starting you have probably been frantically searching where you’d like your children to spend their time.

I look back on the days of swimming lessons, skating, and crafts and appreciate those days that I took the time to choose lunchtime wisely. Nowadays you can find great Groupon deals and "buy one get one coupons" where you can get a value meal for them, and even a latte for you; With value and speed thru the drive thru, you can accomplish a lot. Summertime is here folks! Here’s wishing you many shortcuts throughout the Summer heat, by finding the best value in a "time crunch" of many scheduled activities.

Pass me that bottle… [Shaking it for more minutes!]

First Hockey Game… Put this in the baby book.

With MY VERY OWN EYES: I witnessed my first Hockey Game, men on ice strategically chasing a “PUCK”! There it was a half full arena with fans large and small. I was surprised by the small children who filled seats as I may be attending my first game but I have seen some of the news coverage and the fights have been pretty brutal. This game my friends did not carry the reputation in my mind of being a “Family Show”… unless you were HERE.

Just as I’m sizing up the place, after the nice salute to the flag, a fight breaks out. Helmets drop and unlike basketball the referees seemed to let this baby go on as long as it wanted to. I guess it was like one of those "let ‘em get this out of their system" fights cause there was nobody trying to break this up. And it was also like it was a staged fight as in other games, it was like I said "brutal"… this little "tiff" was like rated "G" for kids and family. They must have pulled them aside and told them to fight clean as it was a "Family Show". (Even though the guys in front of me were yelling to "get ‘em" as if ignited with “dog fight” excitement or something close) So after it was over and I guess "gotten out of their system" a real effort was made to actually get the puck into the goal past the goalie on ice… Then I found out their were only 3 sessions (cause you can’t call them quarters cause it was only 3 of them) with the same amount of entertainment breaks that normally would be like half time shows… but I don’t know what these were called; Intermissions perhaps? There were Costume contests, dances, and relay races as if half time shows were in order.

One other notable… the long drawn out play action almost near to the same time consuming efforts baseball players use to get a score of 3-0. (I hate it when that happens and for that reason I am NOT a baseball fan)

With MY VERY OWN EYES: I saw them decide at the end (The team without points) to call the Goalie in away from guarding the goal from the other team. This only allowed the other team to get their third point. To this I had to say… What the “puck” what that all about?? And with 55 seconds left in the game and two fights total all night, we did as others did after that one… rose to leave the arena making a mental note toward “putting this in the baby book”: First Hockey Game attended 103010.

Never too late

Often times when we feel we missed “the bus” or in essence an opportunity that was lost… we feel discouraged, and even frustrated. However when we sift through the emotions it is very important to note that our NEXT move is vital. Just as if you were on a bus stop … pay attention…that NEXT bus is on its way… just wait for it. It’s coming, as in an opportunity.

Yes, it’s been said that opportunities like that one only come once in a life time, but opportunities come just as does success. Gary Ryan Blair said that, “Success is the intentional pre-meditated use of choice and decision”. That’s so DEEP it deserves to be on a Tee Shirt as a walking reminder that choices may or may not be permanent but they can lead to a persons success or failure. The power is in us.

I’ve read that life is 10% of what happens to you and the other 90% is your reaction to it. This has been a profound revelation to me and an imprinted reminder that my attitude of how I perceive things is really what counts. And so it is with you. You may have missed an opportunity but another one is coming. Look for it …with great expectations and it will find you. That is when you “create” the power in the ingredients that go in the recipe called “It’s Never Too Late”!

Home- is that where the heart really resides?

When I was younger, I remember passing by homes on my way to school and noticing the look now known as, "curb appeal". I remember the thought process in wondering what kind of people could live inside. Some homes held dinner aromas, and some smells of laundry sheets. Some expelled stale scents, as some reflected cigarettes and alcohol so strong it would be out to the sidewalk for passersby.

Some homes "looked happy", while others looked so sad, that misery would cover it like clinging vine. It would also make me wonder about the happiness that dwelled within. Shades drawn, paint chipping, grass grown up, and weeds taken over… how much happiness could survive in that kind of place? If home is where the heart is… what kind of home is it, where that heart feels the most comfortable; the most love?

As I now notice people… I sometimes have the same wonderment. Happiness at times pours out of people. But so does sadness. If our bodies were a house, I wonder if "curb appeal" would be noted in how we carry our very own lives… on public display. Anger sometimes reflects past and present hurts, but often time’s smiles also cover hurts in an effort to bury them so deep that no one can see them until those too, surface in other ways. Homes get a fresh coat of paint and a new look outside, but what exist inside cannot go neglected in homes and people as well.

These are the times that try men’s souls, patience, budgets, and our very own lives. You could also say our very own hearts are also being tried. What makes us happy these days is and always has been where we want to be. Make an attempt to file to memory a new happiness, one that not only made you smile but also caused a smile to show up on another person’s face.

How is your “curb appeal"? Is it time for a makeover, a “do over”, or a trial period. Let your lifestyle display one of hope and anticipation. Keep sadness off and mow down depressing thoughts. Surround yourself with positive experiences, places and yes even hearts!

While you are…waiting…

When I was growing up, my oldest sister and I were two and a half years apart….so guess who got their drivers license first? So I became the person who got out and performed the errands for my mother… while my sister drove around the block to come back and get me. (Her system-not mine) I quickly disliked my role after the 3rd or 4th wait. It seemed like it took her "FOREVER to come from just around the block. It seemed as though I would be on a never-ending wait as the blocks just weren’t that long. From then on, I realized I had little patience for the "wait game". The "I’ll be right back" -wait game.

They never …come… right back. (The Twin to "I’ll be right… over…lol)

It was the "waiting to get to work" in a two hour commute that led me work on my business plan, marketing brochure, logo, and fliers. You can only look and appreciate dairy cows for so long. After that, it’s time for an activity. Needless to say I found something "to do". Some folks did cross word puzzles, some slept and some knitted, but I woke up and decided to plan. Making good use of time in a commute is priceless!

From pulling up to "wait" to complete your fast food order, to "waiting" on the doctor, to "waiting" for jury selection, to being “on hold”… to "waiting" on a service man, to “waiting” in line; we’ve all been on the other end of the "wait monitor”. There’s no room on this thread to list ALL of the things that causes us to "wait" endlessly. Time is just too precious to just let it tick by and not be doing "something" while you are waiting. Got minutes? How are you using yours?

NMT?

It’s not enough that we look for short cuts, and the shortest distance to our destinations, even giving nick names for the things we are just to lazy to say. When I was a freshman in college, it wasn’t long before the library became the lib, then Political Science became Poly Sci, and not to mention Susan became Sue and Thomas-Tom and even Mama became- Ma.

Now we are in acronym land and beyond. Our texting even reflects it. Everywhere you look these days there is a new acronym for something. B of A- Bank of America, and Coca cola – Coke, changed a while back but lately I’ve been seeing this new trend all over the place. Baskin Robbins is now BR, Jack N the Box, was JBX for a while but decided not to transform that one. It even sold beer as JBX, but that really wasn’t their brand so it didn’t stick. We have Burger King as BK, and Calvin Klein for CK. But we’re waiting on that "best is yet to come".

Well here’s a new one. Simply YP… yes folks Yellow Pages has joined the "acronym boyz on the porch club" and found a catchy one to keep us from saying "Y-E-L-L-O-W P-A-G-E-S… well we have to admit …it was a mouthful. Now it’s simply YP. I wonder if I can join in by turning TIME AVE into just TA… would that work? Nah. How about NMT? (Need More Time) Now that’s a good one! NMT may be my new signature… LOL!
